About Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Your kidneys perform essential functions to keep your body in balance, including:

  • Removing waste products and excess water
  • Producing red blood cells
  • Balancing important minerals
  • Regulating blood pressure
  • Maintaining bone health

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) occurs when the kidneys are damaged for over three months and struggle to perform their functions. CKD increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. It progresses slowly with few initial symptoms, and is classified into 5 stages to guide treatment.

  • Assessment: CKD is evaluated using:
    • eGFR (Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate): A blood test measuring kidney filtration efficiency.
    • uACR (Urine Albumin-Creatinine Ratio): A urine test measuring kidney filtering ability.
  • Diagnosis: Both tests are repeated to confirm long-term kidney damage.
